Feb 27th Blog Carnival About Etsy

The topic this time is: What made you open a shop on Etsy? What do you like about being a seller on Etsy? What don't you like?

The idea of selling my work online really appealed to me. However, I didn't want to sell my handmade creations on ebay. The fees are too high there and the not handmade things I did try to sell didn't get any bids. I don't even remember how I first heard of Etsy, but as soon as I did, I wanted to open a shop. I imagined myself making beautiful handknits and handspun yarn and selling it at a price that I could actually live on. The being able to live off it part hasn't happened yet, but my shop is gradually growing and having more regular sales.

Etsy has lots of great features. In addition to being a good venue for my shop, Etsy has a great community. I am a member of several teams, and there are people who work on their own to make the site better like etsyhacks.

I don't like the attitude of many of the adim on Etsy. Sellers have voiced valid concerns over
and over again and they are ignored. I think its interesting that now Artfire is around and Etsy is now doing some of the things that sellers like from Artfire- like the announcements section in the forums. I wish they would make the categories make more sense. They've changed them around before but take a knitted hat for example. Is the hat supposed to go in clothing, accessories, or knitting? Does handspun yarn go in knitting, or handmade supplies>yarn?
They need to fix the search, this has been a big issue from the beginning, but with more and more listings on etsy it gets harder to find what you're looking for especially with people mistagging things.
They need to stop Non Paying Buyers. People who click "buy" but don't pay for the item. It's only happened a few times to me, but I get all excited when I have a sale and then to find out that it isn't is a real disappointment. If someone sele
cts paypal to pay for their purchase, the items should not count as sold until its paid for.
On top of that, paypal should not be the only online payment method available. There is the "other" option, but Etsy has yet to make it clear what other is. They could easily make it a text box for the seller to say what other is, say Google Checkout, but because of Etsy's preference for a payment option owned by a competitor (Ebay) we are stuck with paypal. On Etsy, we pretty much have to use paypal to get sales. I wish they would integrate Google Checkout, but they've already said no to that one.

I know it sounds like I am complaining a lot here. I just see how much potential Etsy has, and wish they would live up to some of it instead of promoting their friends on the front page and gift guides.

I like how my shop looks, I like the forums and community, the prices of listings are ok (better than ebay, more expensive than Artfire), I like the Etsymini, and that we can now use Google Analytics on our shops.

MaidenShawl Knit Along/ Read Along

I just got my book yesterday, so I'm starting a bit behind. I still don't have my yarn. My plan is to read fast and knit slow or start off behind on the knitting.

I've already read ahead. I'm having trouble putting the book down. I just want to find out what's next. I'm looking forward to talking about it with the rest of the group.

Here's the link to follow along:

Valentine's Day Blog Carnival

Valentine's Day can be a fun day for a date. The modern tradition is about being romantic, giving small gifts or cards, and having a nice dinner for two. For me, it doesn't have to be a big deal. I'm not into flowers. Last year, I didn't really give it much thought, but my guy surprised me with a very sweet card and some chocolate. If you know me, you know that I enjoy really dark chocolate.

So this thinking about tradition got me thinking about where Valentine's Day came from. There are several different stories, and many Saint Valentines. There are two or three martyred Valentines honored on February 14th.

Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were both martyred and buried on the Via Flaminia, which is a Roman road (they were separated by about a century). The third St. Valentine is said to have died in Africa on February 14th.

Valentine's Day gained the romantic element in the 14th century, and by then people seem to have forgotten which Saint Valentine it was about!

Mentioned in a medieval book about saints is the story of Saint Valentine. St. Valentine was persecuted for being Christian and the Roman Emperor Claudius II interrogated him himself. Claudius tried to covert Valentine to paganism, but Valentine instead tried to convince Claudius to convert to Christianity. Claudius sentenced him to death, and locked him up. While in jail waiting, Valentine healed the jailer's daughter.

It seems the first romantic element was added by Chaucer when he composed a poem to honor the engagement of England's Richard II and Anne of Bohemia.

It's still a bit fuzzy how a day to honor Christian martyrs morphed into a day to be romantic and give cards and chocolate and flowers.

This year, Valentine's Day is on a Saturday. It looks like my guy will be working late, and then we're planning on hanging out with friends the next day.

Progress on my January To Dos

After the new year I made a list of things I wanted to do for my shop.

  • New banner
  • New avatar
  • Make a new scarf pattern for my shops
  • Post my new fingerless mittens
I'm making good progress. Yeah, the mittens were an easy one. I just completed the new banner and avatar yesterday. I've updated my banner here and the new avatar is posted above. I wanted ones that better show off the variety in my shop. I had my inventory all spread out and a photo shoot yesterday, and I realized how perfect my knit bag is for yarn. I think they go very well together.

So, now I just have to write that scarf pattern down...

Wednesday's Blog In

Lot's of bloggers spread the word about the CPSIA on Wednesday the 28th of January. It's exciting to see so many people working together for a good cause! And now we have a bit of relief too
There is now a one year stay for testing! This is excellent news, as National Bankruptcy Day has been pushed back a year. Maybe in the mean time they can come up with some useful exceptions to this crazy law- or just start from scratch.

And now, the marvelous bloggers:
