Toe Up Socks with Gusset and Heel Flaps

I really like knitting socks toe up, but I also wanted to try for a better fit by adding a gusset, and I wanted to knit it with magic loop instead of double points. I searched and searched and didn't find a pattern that had what I was looking for. So I examined heels and gussets in several different patterns and of course my gauge was different, and this is what I came up with.

I knit from both ends of the yarn, which is why the stripes progress in opposite directions.

This is a basic sock formula which can be adjusted. The numbers in my example fit a size 6 US shoe size (9 inches toe to heel, and 7.75inches around the ball of the foot).

Gauge: 6.25 st/in

Needle size: 4

Yarn: Indulgence 6 Ply Distrato (at 426 yards, it looks like I have enough for another pair)

Use a cast on appropriate for magic loop knitting, such as this

Cast on 16 stitches per sock (8 each for the top and bottom). If you want a wider toe, cast on more to start.

Toe increases:

Row 1: K1, M1, knit to last stitch, M1, K1; K1, M1, knit to last stitch, M1, K1

Row 2: K around

Continue increasing until there are 48 stitches per sock. (or more for a wider sock)

Knit around until you have 6 inches or about 2/3 of the total foot length. This can be adjusted depending on how big of a gusset you want. On this sock I did 3 rounds of increasing for the gusset, if you want more start that many rows earlier.

The first half of the sock is the top.

Row 1: Knit across the top. K1, M1, knit to last stitch, M1,

K1 (2 stitches increased)

Row 2: K around

Repeat until you have the desired number of gusset increases.

Turn Heel

How wide or narrow the heel is can be adjusted by how many stitches are in the middle of the heel. This gives a fairly wide heel.

Row1: K 23, M1, K1, wrap and turn

Row2: P18, M1, P1, W&T

Row3: K16, M1, K1, W&T

Row4: P14, M1, P1, W&T

Row5: K12, M1, K1, W&T

Row6: P10, M1, P1, W&T

Row7: K8, M1, K1, W&T

Row8: P6, M1, P1, W&T

Knit around picking up and K2TOG the wraps as you go. (Pick up the wrap, put it on the left needle, and knit it together with the stitch it was wrapped around)

Heel Flap

K till 8 stitches left, SSK, turn

Sl 1, P20, P2TOG

Sl 1, K20, SSK

Continue decreasing until you are back to 48 stitches per sock (so 24 on the heel side).

Leg

Knit around until a little less (1 1/4 inches) than desired length

Switch to K2, P2 rib for 1 1/4 inches.

Another Finished Item

Does this wrap look familiar? It's very similar to my wedding wrap, but I changed the center pattern from cables to lace and knit in a different yarn. It took me forever to knit it, but I finished it!

A friend of mine was talking about dressing up as Jayne Cobb, and we got to talking about me knitting a Jayne hat. Well, it took me a while, but I got it done! I made a pattern for a Jayne hat.

Made for a head 22 to 24 inches around

Cast on 56 stitches in orange and join

Work 1 by 1 rib for 3 rows
Then knit 2.5 in of orange (3.5 in orange total, 13 rows)

Length of hat body = 8 in

row3: k2tog, k5, 7 times around

Ear Flaps

Placed slightly towards the back of the hat.
Pick up 15 stitches
Knit 17 rows stockinette
K2tog, K2tog, knit till 4 st remain, SSK, SSK
P2tog, purl across, P2tog
K2tog, knit across, K2tog
Repeat last two rows until 3 stitches remain
Cut yarn, pull end through last 3 st, tie, and leave end to hang.
Weave in end at top.

Make a pompom and attach it at the top, weave in any last ends, and you're done!

Soap Sock Pattern

My totally awesome soap sock pattern deserves to be out there for people to enjoy and make cute little soap socks!

I had some small bits of cotton yarn sitting around and I wanted a pattern that I could use those. This pattern is perfect for that. Even if you don’t have enough of one color for the body of the sock, you can easily make it have stripes.

This is a great project to learn how to make socks or a new sock technique, like magic loop. You don’t even have to make a second one if don’t want to so no worries about second sock syndrome.

Soapy is great for small pieces of handmade soap. It’s a washcloth that you put the soap into, and now its not so slippery.

SIZE
holds a 2.5 by 1 by 1 inch piece of soap

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Bottom of sock: 3 inchesHeal to top: 2.5 inches

MATERIALS
MC (green) and CC (light yellow) Sugar and Cream (cotton; 70.9g/2.5 oz per skein) or a cotton yarn of similar weight

1 #4 US circular needle of a long length

The finished soap sock is 13 grams

19 sts/33 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch
Soapy itself isn’t even 4 inches and unless you’re knitting this for a specific bar of soap, the gauge doesn’t have to be exact.

This sock is knit toe up on one circular needle.

CO 8 sts using magic cast on (4 sts on each needle)

turn, yarn to front, K across, now there are 2 YO’s, turn them around and K3TOG

Continue until all the short row have been worked ending in a P3TOG

Switch to MC

Yarn to front, K across row, K2TOG (the YO and the 1st ST on the waiting needle)

Small Purse Pattern

Who doesn't like ideas for things to make with small amounts of yarn!?
I'm going to try to make some patterns to make with small amounts of handspun yarn or yarn left over from other projects.


This is the first of those patterns. I made this cute little purse out of handspun Blue Faced Leicester almost bulky yarn and and handspun with beads wool worsted weight yarn. I chose different weights so the top of the purse would be larger then the bottom. The whole thing is a whopping 1/2 oz (13 grams)



Knit a rectangle 8in wide and 4 in tall (mine was 35 stitches)

With the border yarn (beaded yarn) knit 4 rows, then bind off except for 3 st.

Knit I cord on these 3 st for 5.5 in or the length that you want the handle.

Fold the rectangle in half with the purl side out; on the end opposite where your I cord starts pick up and knit 3 st, then bind off.

With the purl side still out and with the 1st color crochet or sew the open edge together.

Weave in ends.
Turn knit side out.





Ta da! A cute little purse. Its a good size for holding business cards and a few extras like lipstick. I just checked, my digital camera fits in it. An ipod would fit too.

Stripey Diagonal Rib Scarf

Here it is, the free pattern for my Stripey Diagonal Rib Scarf. It's reversible and more interesting than garter stitch.

Made with Lamb’s Pride Worsted 85% wool/ 15% mohair for Purple and Blue
Lite-Lopi for Dark Purple

Gauge in rib pattern relaxed: 6st per in, stretched 4 st per in
6 rows per in.

K = Knit
P = Purl
KFB = Knit into front and then back of stitch
K2TOG = Knit 2 together
#(K2, P2) = K2, P2 # times

It might help to use a stitch marker or safety pin to mark the right side row. Once the scarf is done it is reversible, but while you are knitting it you need to keep track of which side to do the increases and decreases on.

If you want the same stripes be sure to read the whole pattern before starting.
